If you are planning a new development project, preparing to undergo a remodel or are currently in permitting process, consider taking advantage of the Green Building Incentive Program and get reimbursed up to $2,000!
What is the Green Building Incentive Program?
The City of Encinitas Green Building Incentive Program promotes and encourages sustainable building practices to reduce environmental impacts and promote decarbonization through financial incentive, priority plan check, and recognition from the Encinitas City Council. To be considered for the incentive, a project must be registered with and achieve Build It Green (BIG) or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
Aiming Towards a Greener Future
As climate change continues to be an increasing threat, there is a need to increase the adoption of green building practiced throughout the world. By constructing sustainable buildings, not only will environmental and climate conditions improve, but homeowners will also save money in the long run. Investing in sustainable infrastructures now, will create more resilient, healthy, and financially responsible communities for future generations.
How do I participate in the Green Building Incentive Program?
To be considered for the Green Building Incentive, applicants must:
1. Submit a completed registration to the Green Building Incentive program. Please note that registration should be submitted as early as possible to receive the maximum incentive.
2. Submit proof of registration to BIG or LEED, certification checklist, supporting documentation and proof of payment of BIG or LEED’s registration fee to receive priority plan check.
3. In your building application and plans, include the green building measures and project features supporting your BIG or LEED certification.
4. After the project is permitted and constructed, provide verification of final BIG or LEED certification to receive recognition at a City Council meeting and a reimbursement up to $2,000.
Why Take Advantage of the Program?
1. More Efficient Homes
BIG and LEED provide frameworks for highly efficient buildings which provide environmental benefits such as reduced emissions, water conservation, and minimal construction waste meaning cost savings utility bills when compared to traditional construction.
2. Get Up to $2,000 for Getting Certified
By fulfilling the requirements of either the BIG or LEED certification your project will be eligible for a reimbursement of up to $2,000 from the City!
3. Expedited Plan Check Review
With the vast number of plans the City reviews, it can take some time to receive construction permits. When you register with the Green Building Incentive Program, your project gets priority review.
4. Council Recognition
Finally, we want to celebrate your commitment to the environment by recognizing your project at an Encinitas City Council meeting.

Use this diagram developed by our friends at Southern California Edison. It depicts various ways a building can decarbonize. Residential and commercial projects can reduce their carbon footprint by incorporating energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, and the use of advanced electric appliance technology like heat pumps and induction cooking.
